How is pregnancy massage different from regular remedial massage?
The primary way in which pregnancy massage differs from remedial, is in the techniques and strokes used by the therapist. Pregnancy Massage predominantly uses gentle Swedish Massage techniques, which involves long, slow sweeping strokes with minimal pressure. Many of the techniques used in Remedial Massage are unsuitable for pregnancy. Pregnancy Massage in Trimesters 2 and 3 is primarily offered in the side-lying position, for optimal comfort and safety of Mum and baby.
What are the Benefits of pregnancy massage?
The focus of pregnancy massage is to help soothe and relax nervous and muscular tension, which can help the mother sleep more easily and more deeply. Pregnancy massage may also help to ease any anxiety regarding pregnancy and birth by soothing and calming the parasympathetic nervous system.
Massage helps the mother’s body to eliminate waste products through the lymphatic and circulatory systems, which combat fatigue and helps the mother feel more energetic.
Common pregnancy discomforts, such as hip or lower back pain, leg cramps, muscle tightness, thoracic and neck tightness, headaches, oedema causing sore swollen ankles and feet and decreased range of movement, can also be eased with Massage.
Pregnancy Massage offers the mother time to embrace her pregnancy, rest and recharge.
Follow up appointments:
Pregnancy Massage is a beautiful way to support yourself and your body as it changes through your the pregnancy, so it is beneficial to have regular massage throughout, to address the different needs each stage may bring.
It works well to align your pregnancy massages within the following days of each appointment with your chosen healthcare provider (Midwife, Obstetrician, etc…) . This way, your pregnancy massage therapist has the most up to date information with regards to your pregnancy at each appointment.
A full client history will be taken at the beginning of every Pregnancy Massage to ensure we accommodate and discuss any changes that may have occurred once your last appointment.
Is Massage safe in pregnancy?
When carried out by a trained professional, massage is very safe and very beneficial in pregnancy.
What if I start to feel uncomfortable during my pregnancy massage?
Should you start to feel discomfort or anxiety at any stage of your pregnancy massage treatment, please feel free to raise it immediately with your therapist, at which point we can discuss ways to help you feel comfortable, or cease the massage altogether. This is your time, and it should be enjoyable for you and baby!
