Can exercise help you feel less tired?

Written by rebeccah

Often when we feel tired, exercise isn’t the first thing we think of to remedy it. Surprisingly, it can be helpful in providing a quick boost of energy to get you through the day, with more benefits the more frequently you exercise.

Exercise increases energy.

How can exercise decrease tiredness?

When we exercise, the body needs more energy supplies. This triggers the release of hormones called Endorphins which provide a happy feeling that reduces stress and makes us feel more energised. Endorphins have also been linked with improving concentration, attention and short-term memory which can allow you to be more productive throughout the day.

Your cardiovascular health also benefits from exercise. Exercise encourages better circulation of blood and nutrients around your body. This allows your tissues to use more oxygen and increases the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. As a result, you’ll have more energy and more endurance to complete your daily activities.

Exercising frequently also encourages your sleep quality to improve, which allows you to wake up feeling fresher and more energised.

What are other simple ways to boost your energy?

  • Reduce caffeine intake to improve your sleep quality.
  • Drink more water, especially when exercising more.
  • Lower your stress levels by listening to music or practicing mindfulness.
  • Reduce your alcohol intake as it reduces deep sleep.
  • Eating smaller meals more frequently can increase your energy by keeping your blood sugar levels stable and prevent energy crashes.

What kind of exercise is needed?

Any exercise has the potential to decrease tiredness and boost your mood. It’s important to choose activities that are right for you and that you’ll actually enjoy!

Exercise could be classes offered at your local gym or workouts you can do at home such as cardio or weight lifting. Or it can be simple things like going for a walk, riding a bike, or playing a game of tennis.
